It Only Takes a Spark
House fires are something that affect thousands yearly. They destroy personal and valuable possessions and take lives. Don’t let your home be one of the many that is torn apart by this preventable accident.
One of the most important things is to have your home regularly inspected. This includes your electrical wiring, gas plumbing, heating and air conditioning. Here are some tips to keep your house running smoothly and safely.
- Check your electrical system. Make sure there aren’t any wires in the ceiling being frayed by rodents and pests, that your circuit breaker isn’t being overloaded and there are no improper grounded receptacles.
- Look over the gas system connected to your home. The system shouldn’t have any loose fittings, leaking valves, faulty pilot lights, and debris or flammable materials near it. Check that there is no lint or dust build up around it.
- Air conditioning and heating systems need periodic maintenance. These systems need to be cleaned and checked so that nothing breaks off and build-up doesn’t grow.
Also, keep all kitchen appliances clean so that grease doesn’t accumulate and space heaters should be kept away from flammable materials. A regularly used fireplace should also be cleaned. Using a dry, seasoned wood to burn can easily prevent buildup in the chimney.
To stay one step ahead of this preventable disaster, make a plan with your family on the best exits and where to meet. Also, install a smoke detector that is regularly checked and has working batteries. We provide smoke detectors and other accessories for homes to keep you and your family safe. Routine maintenance from a trained professional is the best safety.
